Report of the 20th European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry The 20th European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry was held at the Porto Carras Resort, Chalkidiki, Greece 1st-3rd September 2011 The event was organised by the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS) together with the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) and the Greek local organising committee (Basilis Psychogios, Serafim Papadimitriou and Theodoros Petanidis). The Congress commenced on Thursday in the traditional manner with the EVDC Study Day organised by the European Veterinary Dental College at the Veterinary Faculty of Thessaloniki. These training sessions would not be possible without the extremely generous support of three major equipment sponsors, Acteon/Satelec, Accesia and Duerr Medical. There were a total of three wet-labs in the morning, which covered “surgical extractions”, “dental radiography” and “rostral mandibulectomy”. All of these were tutored by Diplomates of the EVDC. On Thursday evening the welcome reception and the opening of the congress was held outside by the pool of the hotel. It was well attended and opened by Basilis Psychogios (LOC) and Philippe Roux (president of EVDC). Drinks and snacks were served. This year the congress had two streams over two days. On Friday there was one stream with basic dentistry and the second with lectures in oral surgery and diagnostic imaging. On Saturday there was one stream with topics in oral pathology, endodontics, research and anaesthesia/analgesia and the second stream with topics in halitosis (sponsored by Virbac), oral pathology, miscellaneous and exotic dentistry. In all 43 presentations were given during the two days of the main congress with speakers coming from many countries all over the world. This year there were four posters which were well attended by delegates. On Friday, after the end of the lectures and the AGM of EVDS, the other tradition of the ECVDthe Gala Dinner – took place. The tables were placed outside in three levels like in an ancient theatre. The EVDS president, Jan Schreyer, gave a speech and the EVDC president, Philippe Roux, announced the new EVDC diplomates. Hill's presented the winners of their questionnaire. The food was of a typical Greek style with a great variety of dishes. The music was also Greek. A folklore dance group performed traditional dances and later on invited delegates to dance with them. The weather, the sea, the food, the music and most importantly the delegates made it an unforgettable event. This dinner was partly and kindly sponsored by Hill's. On Saturday after the last lecture, delegates had the opportunity to attend an “ouzo party”, which was a short trip on a ship, with the possibility to dive from the ship and swim near to Kelyfos island. Directly afterwards Virbac invited members to a beach barbecue. This was also a very nice idea. Delegates could relax after their time spent at the scientific meeting. The Congress was attended by about 230 delegates from many countries around the world. The Major sponsors of the congress were Hill's, Royal Canin, Pfizer and Duerr Medical. Our other sponsors were Acteon/Satelec, Bayer, Kruuse/IM3, Midmark, NewTom 3G, Ultima and Virbac. Once again this year 20 young graduates were sponsored by Royal Canin to attend the Congress. Last but not least we want to thank the local organising team for their great work to make the congress such a success. Future congresses will take place in spring. We are happy to be able to announce the 21th European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry, which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, 24th - 26th May 2012. Please see our website www.ecvd.info.
