Report of the 28th European Veterinary Dental Forum

The 28th European Veterinary Dental Forum was held in the Jaarbeurs Supernova – Utrecht, The Netherlands from May 16 – May 18, 2019. The event was organised by the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS) together with the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) and very importantly the Local Organising Committee: Marnix Lamberts, Theo van Delft, Lies Paardekooper and Evelyne Ledeboer (LOC). The congress was attended by 524 delegates plus on Saturday 36 Nurses from 42 countries from all continents and personnel of 20 sponsors.

The Forum commenced on Thursday in the traditional manner with the Study Days organised by EVDC and EVDS. The Study Days took place in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Utrecht University. These training sessions would not be possible without the extremely generous support of our equipment sponsors: iM3, Accesia, Acteon, Stöpler / Karl Storz and Horse Dental Equipment.

There were 5 morning and 5 afternoon courses that last 3 hours per course. The following topics were covered:

  • Management of mandibular/maxillary fracture repair in cats
  • Caudal maxillectomy
  • Rodents and Lagomorphs selected dental procedures
  • Full crown and veneer preparations
  • Temporary crown elongation technique
  • Periodontal Flap surgery
  • Surgical endodontics
  • Endodontic treatment basics: access and manual debridement
  • Tooth dissection techniques for dental  extractions
  • Dental instruments and dental materials for endodontics

All of these were tutored by Diplomates of the EVDC, AVDC and other specialists in the dental and oral field.

On Thursday evening the welcome reception and the opening of the congress was held at the Academiegebouw from the Utrecht University, located in the historic city centre. It is Utrecht University’s ceremonial heart. The reception was well attended and opened by the president of LOC, Marnix Lamberts and Prof. dr. Anton Pijpers, President of the Executive Board of the University. Drinks and food were served.

This year there were four parallel streams on Friday and four on Saturday. The key note speech was held by Prof. Bruno Loos. The title of his lecture was: Human periodontitis - what is it and what can we learn from it. There were lectures in many fields of essentials, research, intermediate and advanced dentistry, exotics and equine dentistry. On Saturday a Nurse stream was organised for the 1st time.

Interactive sessions where provided by Diplomates of EVDC and AVDC. In all, 82 presentations plus 12 presentations during the nurse stream were given during the two days of the main congress with speakers coming from all over the world. This year there were nine posters which were well attended by the delegates.

On Friday, after the end of the lectures and the AGM of EVDS, the other tradition of the EVDF, the Gala Dinner, took place in Museum Speelklok. The EVDS President, Henriëtte Booij-Vrieling, gave a short speech and the EVDC President, Jerzy Gawor, welcomed the XXX new EVDC Diplomates. The dinner was kindly sponsored by Hill's and IM3. Later on a DJ and Saxophonist animated delegates to dance.
